WE LIVE AS IF ON THE EDGE OF A VOLCANO.
This phrase was taken from a letter written on 30 November, 1942 by Shalom-Shachna Broin-Kahane. He wrote these words in a letter that he sent to his relatives in the US from the Zbaraż ghetto. While the theme of the festival is inspired by his words, written amidst the most horrifying of experiences, we invite you to join us in revealing the resilience of Jewish peoples and the life that continues to burst forth.
What might you want our ancestors to know about us? What dreams might they have dreamed, or maybe left un-dreamt, that we have fulfilled or have yet to fulfill? How might we embody living life on the edge of a volcano in the present? How might diasporic Jews embrace precarity as a form of spiritual discipline or cultural value?
