For the past two years, the Jewish Zine Archive has published a monthly poster zine. Each zine is printed on a single sheet of 11x17 paper, folded into quarters, that unfolds into a poster image. Over the past two years, the series has only once featured the writing of a guest at a direct invitation. For the first time JZA is seeking pitches for both writing and artwork as we enter into the third cycle of the poster zine series!
The deadline for pitches is on Tu B’Shvat (January 25th, 2024) at 10:00pm MT. All pitches must be emailed to jewishzinearchive@gmail.com with the subject line “Poster Zine Series Pitch.”
How do you pitch?
You might have art and writing that you’re envisioning. Perhaps you only wish to write on a particular topic. Or you have a vision for particular artwork. Maybe you have a collaborator you’d like to work with? All these variations are welcome! If you propose art or writing only, we will match your work with something complimentary.
Please send a short description (1-2 paragraphs) of your proposed contribution. There is no need to have it all finished yet! If your work is selected, we will work with you and assign deadlines for production.
If you have prior writing or artwork samples, you may include 1-2, but please do not exceed that amount.
We are much more likely to select pieces from writers and artists who are not professionals or are new to sharing their work with larger audiences! This doesn’t mean we’ll exclude working writers or artists, but we hope to elevate new voices and visions of worlds to come.
While there is not an explicit theme for the 3rd cycle of the series, we encourage you to connect your work to a month, a season, a holiday, Jewish history, sacred texts, ancestral practices, or Jewish cultures. Again, you need only pitch 1-2 paragraphs to us about your proposed concept, but we need to be able to clearly understand your proposed project!
We are seeking artwork and writing for the following months of the Jewish calendar: Adar I, Adar II, Nissan, Iyar, Sivan, Tammuz, Tishrei, Cheshvan, Kislev (the other months will be produced by Chava Shapiro of JZA).
Please see the requirements for both below:
Written submissions may not exceed 750 words. JZA will work with you to edit the pieces before going to print.
Artwork must be conceptualized with only 1-2 risograph ink colors in mind. You will need to be flexible with color palettes, as the inks and papers in stock may vary. If you have never set up a file for risograph printing before, that is okay, JZA will work with you to ensure your artwork looks as beautiful as possible.
